Britain's Competition and Markets Authority announced that it has launched an inquiry into SLB’s proposed $8bn acquisition of ChampionX. The regulator is assessing whether the deal, announced last April, could impact competition in UK markets.

Beacon Roofing Supply implemented a poison pill defense to counter an $11bn hostile takeover attempt by billionaire Brad Jacobs and his company, QXO. The move aims to prevent Jacobs from gaining control of the building products distributor as he seeks to expand QXO’s presence in the sector.

Jacobs, who founded QXO in 2023 after investing $1bn in a software company, has been aggressively pursuing acquisitions. Beacon’s defensive strategy is designed to deter unwelcome takeovers by making it more costly for QXO to increase its stake.

The CMA has set a March 27 deadline for submissions from interested parties as part of its Phase 1 merger inquiry.
